Dakar: Dakar in mourning over the death of Carles Falcón

Carles Falcón didn't make it. The Spanish motorbike rider died today following injuries sustained in the serious accident of which he was the victim in the final kilometres of the second stage of the Dakar, from Al Henakiyah to Al Duwadimi. Having immediately appeared to be in critical condition, the 45-year-old was resuscitated on the spot by rescuers before being transferred to Riyadh hospital, where he was diagnosed with a fracture of the C2 vertebra and a cerebral oedema. Falcón was then transferred last Friday to Spain, where the TwinTrail Racing team announced the death of its rider with a statement.

"This Monday, January 15, Carles left us. The medical team has confirmed that the neurological damage caused by cardiorespiratory arrest at the time of the accident is irreversible,” it can be read in the note issued by the team, which wanted to fondly remember its rider.

"Carles was a smiling person, always active, who passionately enjoyed everything he did, especially motorcycles. He left us doing something that was his dream, racing the Dakar. He was enjoying himself, he was happy on the bike. We must remember him for his smile and for the happiness he generated in everyone – the note continued – He was a computer engineer by training. Motorcycle instructor and motorcycle travel guide by passion. There are many who have learned at his side. He taught with patience, energy and happiness, he made everyone enjoy the bike. This is what he has left us and what we will always keep with us, all of us who have been close to him, family, friends, colleagues and fans. The family and the team ask that the privacy of the farewell events that will take place in the coming days be maintained. Thanks for your understanding.”

The 45-year-old Catalan was tackling his second participation in the Dakar after his debut in the 2022 edition, which ended in 68th place in the overall classification and 16th in the unassisted category, Original by Motul. He returned to the race with the #135 used in his first participation, with the aim of completing the marathon with his teammate Isaac Feliú, but destiny unfortunately decided to reserve another fate for him.
